Blind puppy saved from euthanasia looking for love

There have been a couple of stories lately that have made me shake my head in complete incomprehension – here’s another one.

How beautiful is little Bea? Yet all her breeder could see of her was that she would not “sell”. So to that breeder, the tiny puppy was no longer worth anything, and was taken to the vet, at just FIVE WEEKS OLD, to be put to sleep.

I’ll let that sink in for a second. This gorgeous little Yorkshire Terrier was condemned before her life had really started, due to a disability which will not stop her living a happy life.

Puppies survive being dumped in a bucket

Here’s a “pupdate” on the six tiny Lurcher puppies who were dumped in a bucket late in 2016. The tiny, five week old pups were dumped on a doorstep a few days before Christmas 2016. Due to the timing of their discovery, the youngsters were named after Santa’s reindeer, after being taken to the RSPCA.

The litter of puppies are recovering from their ordeal, although one puppy – Dasher - very sadly died of parvo within a few days of being rescued. The surviving puppies are doing very well, thankfully.

Fickle fashions affecting French bulldogs and Pugs

The RSPCA is reporting an upturn in the number of “designer breeds” such as French bulldogs and Pugs being abandoned. Becoming fashionable can have dire consequences for a breed, for as more people choose to buy a puppy of a specific breed, more people will sadly choose not to keep the dog long-term. Some of the unfortunate dogs who are cast aside by their owners end up being taken in by the RSPCA.

In 2016 the charity rescued several Pugs and French bulldogs who had been abandoned. Here are some of their stories:

Persuading poorly pups to eat

Friends of mine who live outside of the UK has taken on a foster puppy. It has been delightful to their photos and video of the delightful puppy going at life full tilt in the way puppies usually do. Except of course that bearing in mind the fate of many dogs in this particular country, this puppy is lucky to be having such a carefree start to life with the promise of a happy adulthood.

MPs met today Tuesday 8 March to discuss their concerns over the health and welfare of dogs bred for sale

Scottish National Party MP Dr Lisa Cameron (East Kilbride, Strathaven and Lesmahagow) proposed the debate in Westminster Hall on ‘Welfare of young dogs bred for sale’.

Opening the debate, she told MPs: “This issue has cross-party support… and widespread public support.

“We are here fundamentally to represent our constituents, not to enable big businesses trading in puppy maltreatment. Action, and not merely words, is required.”
