Tennis-loving RSPCA dog Murray predicts 2017 Wimbledon winner

Who will have an ace and slam the competition at this year’s tournament? Bulldog Murray has his say on who he predicts will take home the trophy…

It’s clear which player tennis-mad Murray will be supporting at this year’s Wimbledon... But the American bulldog with a love for the sport put his own feelings aside to predict who will come out on top in the 2017 south London tournament.

Five-year-old Murray, who is currently being cared for by RSPCA South Godstone Animal Centre, in Surrey, is a tennis ball fanatic and staff decided to channel his enthusiasm into some fun Wimbledon predictions.

He was given the option of four green tennis balls - one for each of the four top seeded men: Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal - to find out who he thought would take home the trophy.

Murray predicted Swiss champion Roger Federer to take his eighth Wimbledon title, claiming victory in the men’s final on Sunday 16 July.

South Godstone centre manager, Darren Parish, said: “Murray loves nothing more than chasing tennis balls so we thought we’d give him an important job to do to keep him occupied while he waits for his paw-fect home.

“He loved predicting who would win this year’s tennis tournament - although we think he’d have chosen all the tennis balls if given the chance!

“We hope his namesake will take home the trophy for the third time this year and are keeping everything crossed that our own champion will bag himself an ace home too!”

The handsome dog is looking for his fur-ever home and staff feel he would be best going to a family with older children, due to his size, and a cat-free house.

“Murray is a gentle giant with a heart of gold,” Darren added. “He’ll make someone a wonderful ball boy as he loves playing chase and fetch.

“He’s very affectionate and loves spending time curled up with people - as long as they don’t mind a bit of slobber!

“He walks well on the lead but can be a bit strong when he’s excited. He knows some basic commands and would benefit from further training. He gets on well with other dogs so could with with a canine companion.”
