10 steps to getting a great dog from the shelter

Jennifer Cattet is an experienced owner and trainer, training service dogs for a variety of roles, and her article, 10 steps to getting a great dog from the shelter, provides potential adopters with ways to identify a rescue dog that will suit them. Bear in mind that all the service dogs Jennifer trains were rescue dogs when she met them.

With all her experience adopting dogs to train, Jennifer has developed effective, practical strategies to assess dogs in the shelter - and one of her most useful tips is to be prepared to walk away empty handed. If you're considering getting a dog and whether to adopt pr buy, Jennifer has the advice you need.

To read Jennifer's article, visit the Smart Animal Training website. To find out more about her service dogs visit the Medical Mutts website.

If you're looking for a great pet, there's a number of reasons why shelter dogs can be the number one choice.

Volunteering with Dogs Trust

If you would love to adopt a rescue dog, but the time isn't quite right yet, there are many volunteer roles you can take on which would benefit a rescue shelter. In this interview, James Sowerby, who works at the Kenilworth Dogs Trust Centre talk about how you can help.

Rescue dogs spend a lot of time in their kennel, so walking them, or just spending time with them can be helpful. But beyond that there are lots of canine care jobs to be done, the maintenance of the centre, and home checks to be carried out. And every volunteer hour frees up an hour of work time for staff to carry out vital tasks.

For more information about volunteering at any of their centres around the UK visit the Dogs Trust website.

We're always on the look out for volunteers. We really struggle down in kennels with time as canine carers - we'd love to be spending as much time as we want with the dogs but we've got all this cleaning, the feeding, and the adopting and everything else to do.
