Runner has canine trainer for London Marathon

POUNDS FOR HOUNDS!

Local lady recruits her Dogs Trust Roden canine companion as personal trainer in run up to London Marathon

Lorna Crawford is all set to run the Virgin London Marathon on April 25th 2010 to raise money for Dogs Trust, the UK’s largest dog welfare charity. Her intensive sixteen week training regime is rather unique as her devoted training partner is Axel, an old Dogs Trust Roden resident!

With just under a week to go, Lorna can be seen running around the parks of Sutton Coldfield with her faithful canine companion by her side.
Axel, her beloved Doberman, takes his position very seriously and can be seen donning his very own high-vis training vest.

It has been a very tough few years for dog lover Lorna, who has been diagnosed with Vaso-Vagal Syncope, a condition that causes her to collapse suddenly. Lorna also suffers from an irregular heart beat and as a result had a pacemaker implanted at just 27 years old. Ever the fighter, this has only made her all the more determined to complete the Marathon. This is a huge personal challenge and a fantastic opportunity to raise money for Dogs Trust Roden who took Axel in after he was abandoned.

Lorna explains:

“I truly believe that Axel, along with my friends and family, has helped get me through what has been a very difficult few years. He has been a constant, loyal support to me and has shown nothing but unconditional love especially when I’m particularly ill or down – he just knows. I am running for Dogs Trust as there is no greater motivation for me than being able to give something back to those dogs that are still looking for their forever home.”

Clarissa Baldwin CEO of Dogs Trust says:

“I am thrilled to hear that Lorna is embarking on such a huge challenge to raise money for Dogs Trust and I thank her sincerely. It is particularly gratifying to hear that one of our old residents is playing such a huge part in Lorna’s training regime. Owning a dog encourages an active lifestyle and while not all dog owners are training for Marathons with their canine companions, they are certainly leading healthier lives.”
